    附:报告人简介及报告内容摘要

Prof. Paul M. Lahti is main interests include molecule-based magnetic materials (including metal-free magnetism), electro-optical conjugated polymers and molecules, spectroscopy of high-spin open shell molecules (especially EPR), organic-based LED's, organic and polymer based photovoltaic research, energy transport and charge transfer in organic materials.

In addition to primarily group-related activities, he is co-director with Prof. Tom Russell of UMass Amherst Polymer Science & Engineering Department of Polymer-Based Materials for Harvesting Solar Energy, a $16M Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Basic Energy Sciences. This center is focused on basic research to improve the efficiency of organic molecular and polymer based photovoltaic devices.

This talk will describe recent results from UMass researchers at the PHaSE energy center in using organic molecular and polymer materials for solar energy (photovoltaic) uses. Organic polymers, molecular solids, nanoparticles, and nanocomposites with inorganic nanoparticles are under intense investigation for possible use in light to electricity (photovoltaic) conversion.  The organization of these materials is extremely important to give the best possible photoconversion efficiencies.  The past five years have seen solar cells based on one organic active layer improve from 2-5% power converstion efficiency to aboutt 10%. Recent results for both polymer and molecule-based solar cells will be described, with focus on the importance of trying different strategies to "tune" the morphology of the electronically active layer.
